For my second TED talk analysis, I chose the video "An invitation to men who want a better world for women", by Elizabeth Nyamayaro. Nyamayaro is the head of United Nations Women's "HeForShe" initiative. She was born into poverty in Zimbabwe and suffered extreme famine. The subject of this video is to inform men and women of the "HeForShe" UN Women's Solidarity Movement for gender equality. As the video progressed, Elizabeth stated that when the famine she lived in became worse, she was sent to live with her aunt in the city and attend public school for the first time in her life. She then explained that in her village, she always felt equal with the others but when she went to school in the city, she felt like a misfit and an outcast. However, when she went back to her village on breaks from school she realized that she no longer felt equal with her fellow villagers and friends and family. To me, that challenge relates greatly to the short story "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" by Gloria Andulza that we read at the beginning of the school year. Nyamayaro is advocating that not only men, but women too, need to step up their roles and come together for TRUE gender equality. During the first three days of the movement, more than 100,000 men had signed up for "HeForShe". Her key point and message was to "make gender equality a reality in the 21st century". I can't agree more with her argument because all throughout history and even today, women are still put down in some aspects of the economy, or social roles, or even political positions. Therefore, we ALL need to unite and protect the freedom of our women.
Personal Statement
In my opinion, this TED talk is inspiring and innovative. The "HeForShe" movement opened so many more doors in the world for women, which is something women have never FULLY received. To me, women's rights are a huge attribute to the American dream (freedom and equality) and as well as my own American dream. I highly suggest that EVERYONE watch this remarkable journey through gender equality.
